How Social Media Shapes the News

In this lesson, students practice moving from reaction to investigation.

A lot of what students see as “news” online arrives as fragments: a screenshot, a clip, a caption, a repost. Those fragments can be accurate — but they can also be incomplete, out of context, or framed in a way that changes how people interpret what happened.

This lesson walks students through five core ideas:

• How social media changes the “shape” of news (shorter, faster, more shareable).

• How context drops out when screenshots and images circulate alone.

• How captions and framing influence interpretation.

• How to verify responsibly using multiple outlets and basic checks.
