Students will learn about resources to fact-check information found online.
Students will distinguish factual claims from opinions, predictions, recommendations, and questions; determine whether evidence supports a claim fully, partially, or not at all; and use lateral reading to investigate unfamiliar sources beyond their About pages and visual presentation. They will ask what exactly the claim says, whether evidence can settle it, who is behind the information, what relevant outside sources report, and whether the cited evidence supports the whole claim, a narrower claim, or a different claim. Based on their findings, students will state a proportional verdict while identifying what remains uncertain and what further investigation may be needed.
