Beyond Left and Right: How Political Labels Shape the News

What does this label tell me, what does it leave out, and how has its meaning changed over time?

Students encounter political labels like liberal, conservative, left-wing, right-wing, populist, and centrist all the time. These labels can be useful shortcuts, but they can also oversimplify. A “conservative” party in one country may not look much like a “conservative” party somewhere else. A party may keep the same name over time even as its priorities change.

Students explore four core ideas:

• Political labels can act as shortcuts, but they don’t always tell the whole story.

• Parties with similar labels may have very different priorities.

• News coverage uses labels in ways that can shape interpretation.
