AI Didn't Enter the Classroom. It Merged With It.

A few years ago, “AI in schools” meant students opening a chatbot in another tab.

In 2026, it means something more structural: AI is being baked into the platforms schools already run on… Docs, Classroom, Chromebooks, tutoring tools, and even national education systems.

It’s not “Should we try it?” anymore. It’s: What happens when the default tools start nudging how students read, write, study, and think?

What’s Happening? The Facts.

This next section provides a brief overview of some of the biggest announcements in AI education. The trend? AI is a prominently featured update.

Google at BETT 2026: Gemini Embedded in Classrooms

At BETT 2026, Google framed its education initiative around making AI broadly available and integrating it into day-to-day teaching workflows. Here are the key points:

  • Increasing no-cost accessibility to Gemini Workspace for educators and students.

  • Sharing new ways educators can use Google Workspace for their workflows, improving productivity with Gemini in Chrome and Chromebook Plus, and adding new features to the Classroom tools display to increase classroom engagement.

  • Gemini to connect with the Classroom app for new tools, such as full-length practice SATs.

  • Partnership with Khan Academy to power its Writing Coach, which guides outlining, drafting, and refining for students rather than producing direct output.

OpenAI: Education for Countries Goes Global

In January of 2026, OpenAI introduced their Education for Countries initiative, as part of their OpenAI for Countries Initiative. This roll-out provides access to ChatGPT Edu, GPT-5.2, and study mode, alongside OpenAI certifications and training with the OpenAI Academy.

The first cohort will include Estonia, Greece, Italy’s Conference of University Rectors (CRUI), Jordan, Kazakhstan, Slovakia, Trinidad & Tobago, and the United Arab Emirates. In Estonia, AI tools have already been launched across a network of 30,000 individuals.

This is distinct, as it is direct involvement with governments, it’s policy infrastructure.

xAI & El Salvador: The First Nationwide AI Education Program

In December of 2025, xAI, which builds Grok, announced a partnership with the government of El Salvador to launch a nationwide AI-powered education program. The program will roll out across two years, providing access to more than 5,000 public schools and over a million students. Chatbots have also been introduced in rural Colombia.

Navneet AI & Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Gandhinagar

In February of 2026, at the IndiaAI 2026 Summit in Delhi, Navneet AI and IIT Gandhinagar announced a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to create a structured framework to promote AI literacy in teacher training and curriculum integration. Navneet AI is already integrated across over 500 schools in India.

What Does This Mean for Classrooms?

If you look at the announcements, you can see two futures being pitched at once.

Optimistically, AI becomes a mass-scale support system: every student gets more feedback, more practice, and more explanations on demand. Teacher time is freed up. Students who usually fall behind can get the extra help they need.

In the cautious one, AI becomes a mass-scale shortcut: every student gets output on demand, and the hardest parts of learning quietly become optional.

AI as a “Support Layer” Expanding Access

When tutoring is scarce, AI can behave as a supplement, especially for students who need more explanations, examples, or even language scaffolding.

Ying Xu, Assistant Professor of Education at Harvard, finds that AI can support learning ecosystems with a division of labor:

AI could bring automation, access to information, and efficiency, while human educators offer subject matter expertise, experience, and personal connection and support that students need to thrive.”

If it works well, AI in education systems can provide more practice opportunities without paywalls, faster feedback loops, and better scaffolding for multilingual learners and students who get stuck early.

A Gallup study found that for 60-84% of teachers surveyed, using AI saves them time. And it’s not just a small amount. Saving 5.9 hours per week on average amounts to six weeks per school year, meaning they can reinvest that time into their students (and themselves).

AI as a “Shortcut Layer” Changing How We Think

The risk isn’t simply that students will cheat. It’s that AI makes it easy to skip the mental strain that creates learning.



One clean signal comes from research on adults using GenAI: Lee et al. (2025) surveyed 319 knowledge workers using GenAI tools and found that:

“While GenAI can improve worker efficiency, it can inhibit critical engagement with work and can potentially lead to long-term overreliance on the tool and diminished skill for independent problem-solving.”

Translate that into schools, and you get a familiar pattern. Writing becomes editing AI-produced drafts, studying becomes chatting rather than retrieval practice, and research becomes copying unless verification is taught explicitly.

Student work can look better, but critical thinking might dwindle.

A Different Angle: Child Development

UNICEF’s Innocenti pushes the conversation beyond grades. Their analysis flags three signals in AI-child interaction: scaling, persuasion, and personality-driven proactivity.

Childhood interaction with AI may reach beyond the classroom. While chatbots may aid in education and act as play partners, “constant affirmation and lack of challenges can also hinder the development of critical thinking and emotional resilience.” For children struggling socially, it may increase their reclusion.

Kids can form habits and dependencies before adults put norms into place.

How Do We Keep Thinking Alive Moving Forward?

A good response doesn’t look like a blanket ban or embrace. It looks like designing the learning loop so that thinking stays compulsory. Here are some adaptations you can work with.

Keep “First Attempts” Human

New developments like Khan Academy’s writing coach can be useful when students need help revising before you get the chance to help them. But the first draft? Keep it human. This preserves the part of learning you can’t outsource: generating the initial reasoning.

Ask your students to think of essay topics themselves, look for their own sources, generate their own arguments, and peer review each other’s work before they turn to AI for help.

Make AI Use Visible

Add an “AI use note” to major submissions:

  • Where did AI help?

  • What did you change afterward?

  • What did you verify yourself?

  • What did you notice about the AI’s suggestions?

This develops accountability for their thinking, even if they used AI tools. They might even realize they’re more capable than they thought!

Verification as the New Literacy

An overlooked skill in AI use isn’t prompting, but verifying. Here are some rules you can implement in your classroom:

  • Two-source rule: Cross-check the AI’s claims with two of your own sources.

  • Quote-and-check: Did they actually say this? Find it elsewhere first!

  • Redo the math: Try to figure it out yourself for anything quantitative.

Assess Reasoning

Add one component that forces understanding:

  • Oral Defense: “Talk me through your choices.”

  • Process Logs: “What did you try on your own, when did you turn to AI?”

  • Version Checkpoints: Students provide their version histories, from outline to draft, to revision.

The Bottom Line

AI can make school more accessible, more supportive, and less punishing for students who struggle to start. It can make classroom management and scaffolding easier for teachers.

It can also train students to skip the parts of learning that matter most: thinking, struggling, and explaining. If AI is becoming infrastructure, schools must make sure that thinking can’t be automated away.
